Game Jam Showcases Creative Takes on "Duck, Duck, Goose" Theme

The Indie Den recently finished their Duck, Duck, Goose-themed game jam, with entries closing on September 4th. Participants were allowed two weeks to create games based on the classic children's circle game; this led to 29 total submissions that showcase various approaches to the chase-based theme. The jam's winner will be announced during a live Twitch stream on September 6th, with updates available through The Indie Den Discord. Here are four standout submissions that show the creative range of the event.

Orbis

This was created by ProgrammerOnCoffee. Sometimes just taking the simple approach works. It just involves some orbs and sectors that share colors. The player needs to make sure they match. If they don't match, you just click on the orb until it does a full circle around the others and finds a spot it will enter. Easy, yes, until you add more orbs and sectors. Players must finish as many levels as possible before time runs out.

Squid Duck

This was developed by a team of two, pavelee and wasp_tennis. Taking inspiration from the popular Netflix series Squid Game, with chase sequences where players must constantly press the space bar to escape pursuing ducks armed with weapons. The gameplay involves rapid movements and quick reflexes as players move through environments while being hunted. It has an intense soundtrack aimed at heightening the tension during chase sequences.

Ducktektive

Taking a different approach from the action-focused entries is a puzzle game. Created by Der Kurator, the game requires players to translate a morse code transmitted through a radio. Players have to decode the messages and cross-reference them with a folder of information to identify which ducks could be in danger. The game runs under time pressure, requiring quick translation and decision-making to save the ducks before it is too late.

Wild Goose Chase

This was created by ForestKBS. The game presents a brief Metroidvania-style adventure featuring unique artwork and character animation. While the background art and music maintain a simplistic approach, the main duck character is expressive with detailed movement animations. The developer takes note of the game's short length, positioning it as a proof-of-concept that shows possibilities for future projects.
